Access to affordable and reliable electricity remains a challenge in geographically isolated communities where conventional grid expansion is costly. This study examined the economic feasibility of wind–solar hybrid systems compared with diesel generators for off-grid households, with implications for Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. A scoping review design was adopted, guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The study considered published research and institutional reports on decentralized electricity generation. A structured search strategy, eligibility screening checklist, and data-extraction matrix were developed to examine system configurations, economic indicators, and financial assumptions. Descriptive mapping and narrative synthesis were selected to assess comparative costs and factors influencing economic feasibility. Preliminary Philippine evidence indicated that hybrid renewable-energy systems could reduce electricity-generation costs and diesel dependence under favorable conditions. One comparative study reported potential cost savings of 34.03% relative to diesel-based systems. However, economic performance depended on renewable-resource availability, electricity demand, storage requirements, fuel prices, capital investment, and financing arrangements. Findings from island microgrids also had limited direct applicability to household systems in mountainous communities. The study concludes that wind–solar hybrid systems represent a potential alternative for off-grid electrification, although their economic feasibility in Nueva Vizcaya remains uncertain. Further location-specific assessments incorporating renewable-energy resources, household electricity demand, and life-cycle costs are recommended to support sustainable rural electrification planning.
